Distinguished and Famous people from Glen Innes Severn
📚 Debbie Wells
Sprinter Debbie Wells attended Emmaville Central School, giving her a specific educational connection to the Glen Innes Severn district. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics she ran in Australia’s women’s 4 × 100 metres relay team, which finished fifth. Her athletics record also includes individual sprint competition, with a 200 metres best of 22.98 seconds recorded in 1984. The school connection is documented by the NSW education department’s register of Australian sporting representatives, linking an international athletics career with the small Emmaville school community.
🏛️ Maurice Timbs
Maurice Timbs was born at Glen Innes in 1917 and attended the local St Joseph’s Convent before winning a bursary to continue his education at Armidale. A Commonwealth public-service career took him into Treasury, the Prime Minister’s Department and the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, where he became general manager and then executive member. His responsibilities also reached the arts: he served as a director of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust and deputy chairman of the Australian Opera. Glen Innes provided his birthplace and first schooling, preceding a working life that ranged from nuclear policy to helping sustain theatrical and musical institutions.
